xTuple's Collective Brainpower Blog

We're excited to be launching a new tool for our partner network today. Called xTnet, it's a new way for us to work with our outstanding partners. Among the many important initiatives for xTuple this year is growing our partner network. Building upon our already solid foundation of partners in locations around the world, we're committed to working with local, expert consultants because we know...

Oftentimes, we find ourselves not able to be On-Site or otherwise physically On-Console of the server we need to work on. If time is of the essence the administrator with command line savvy can conquer just about any remote administration or troubleshooting need. How does one acheive this level of connectivity? Where can I get some of that? Well, look no further than 'terminal' and 'ssh'....

We're very proud that you, the members and users of this site, come from all over--not just the good old USA, of course, but Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Russia--more countries than I can name here. It shows that when you offer a leading open source ERP solution for free, the whole world pays attention. We thought it would be fun to visualize this, so we created a...

In case you hadn't heard, the Reference Guide for xTuple ERP 3.3 is now available for sale on the xChange. This is the PDF version of the document, and it retails for $195. We started publishing the PDF version during the previous release cycle, in response to repeated requests from community members who said they wanted it — and would be willing to pay for it, too. As you might imagine,...

Greetings all,

Just a quick note that the much - discussed xTuple ERP version 3.3.0 is now available for download at SourceForge .

Once again, we've built all-in-one installers for Windows, Linux, and Mac - which can install the xTuple ERP client, as well as a local copy of PostgreSQL, up to three sample PostBooks Edition databases, the xTuple Updater tool (also used for...

I'm not a master at ERP--I'm the web guy. My job is to run the xTuple web sites and the xTuple xChange. But one of the benefits of ERP is the ability to consolidate data from all kinds of sources into a single ERP accounting system. In our case, we export customer and order info from the xChange and import it into xTuple ERP (see our docs on xTuple e-commerce integration for more info). This...

I'm a daily user of the Sales and CRM features of xTuple ERP. My favorite screen was the Customer Information Workbench; it was my launch pad. From that screen, I performed a multitude of tasks and could easily jump to many other screens. I commented to John Rogelstad (our Director of Product Development) that if there was a Characteristics tab on the Customer Information Workbench, I would...

Last week I had the pleasure of moderating a panel where representatives of three xTuple customers discussed their experience with open source software. It was, for me, the highlight of an otherwise greatly-diminished Open Source World conference (formerly LinuxWorld). Unusual for a show that has historically focused on things like network switches and kernel hackers, the audience (in our...

My favorite time to do a technology market survey is when we have training class here at corporate headquarters. At xTuple, our target market is the Small and Medium sized businesses. The students that come to our classes are users of the the software and partners mastering the software to help support our customers throughout the world. We get exceptions, but generally the class is full of...

One of my favorite things EVER (besides a list of 1000 other favorite things ever) are 'The Far Side' comics by Gary Larson. For those of us fortunate enough to remember, or to have owned the collected works of the strips, have no problem remembering the artwork for "Mr. Osborne, may I be excused? My brain is full.".

Well, assume that I am in that comic - I'm Mr. Osborne... What do I...

So, you have a fancy new Fedora 11 x86_64 workstation like me? Well, there's some special consideration you need to give your setup to get our Installer working correctly.

We all know what a sandbox is. It's that thing in the backyard our kids play in. The open patch of sand with the plastic shovels and buckets sitting on the surface--and who knows what else buried underneath.

In the world of PostgreSQL database applications and Open Source ERP Software we also have sandboxes. And while they may not be made of sand, they do serve a similar purpose.......

It happens in our forums all the time. Someone posts a question like, “How do I set up PostgreSQL for a multiuser environment?” There's an answer to this question, of course, but it's not simple. You need to know a bit about PostgreSQL, about user adminstration, and about the xTuple ERP database. People seem to think we can paste an answer into the reply field and solve their problem, but what...

In the past week xTuple has released modules to integrate xTuple ERP with Ubercart (a module for Drupal) and osCommerce , two of the most popular open source e-commerce platforms. This is in addition to our long-standing support for Yahoo Stores .

You can find all three free e-commerce integration solutions from xTuple for download from the xChange.

You can download and use any...

SourceForge.net, where you can download the open source PostBooks project, has undergone a lot of changes lately. Some of them are great--the new site home page is a much better interface for users looking to find software on the site--and some are not so wonderful, such as the new file download system, which is still a work in progress. We're hoping they work out the bugs there soon....

We're happy to announce that beta3 of xTuple ERP 3.3.0 is now available for download . This release includes the 129 fixes contributed as a result of the xTuple Bug Derby ; check out the release notes here . In addition to all the bug fixes, you should see some dramatic performance improvements in a number of high-volume situations as well. And if you're not up on all the cool new features...

We cannot read much on technology these days that doesn't have some kind of Social Network angle. Every article you read has a " Digg it " or " ShareThis " button. Maybe you get the your news via Twitter , or learn about a new product from a friend on Facebook . Perhaps you stay connected with old work buddies via LinkedIn . It has been great for me, using these tools, to help me filter the...

Now that the weather's warming up, we're looking forward to a return to the American Rover tall ship - always a highlight of the xTuple training classes.

Mark your calendar for the week of June 15 - it's our most popular class, the xTuple ERP 101 survey course . You'll build your own xTuple database from scratch, and run full business cycles with the data you've created. Network and...

We're very pleased to announce the opening of the xTuple xChange - the online marketplace for xTuple ERP products and services. Think of it as an App Store for the enterprise, where community members can buy and sell add-in packages, extensions, connectors to third-party apps, and much more. And of course, there will be plenty of freely available open source xTuple stuff as well - including...

The other day I was talking with with someone on the phone who was interested in becoming an xTuple partner (As Director of Business Development, I talk to both current and potential partners every day). In this particular conversation, as with nearly every conversation I have with potential partners, the question was posed, “so - what's the theory?” He meant, of course, what's the catch? How...
