Navigating Norfolk

We've got lots of people coming to Norfolk in the next few weeks for our upcoming Intro and Power User training classes.  Visiting a new city can present some challenges.  Before I make travel arrangements, I always review my options with a local, so I know I'm making the best choices.  Below please find my recommendations.xTuple is located at 119 W York Street in Norfolk, Virginia.  Google maps pinpoints the wrong location, and Yahoo maps have not been updated to reflect the partial York Street closure.

AIRPORTS:

Norfolk International (ORF) is the closest airport and is about 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk.

Newport News/Williamsburg (PHF) is about a 40 minutes drive without traffic.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION:

If you are flying into ORF and planning to stay downtown, you don't need to rent a car unless you're interested in exploring the area.  A taxi from ORF is about $20.

If you are flying into PHF, a rental car is cost effective since a cab is about $75.  Also, getting to PHF can be challenging on a Friday afternoon.

HOTELS:

I negotiated special rates at a few local hotels, so mention xTuple when booking your room!

The Residence Inn by Marriott - Currently, the rate is $129 for upto 4 nights and $119 for 5 or more nights.  Breakfast is included, but parking is extra.  They do not have a restaurant onsite, but there are many options within walking distance.  xTuple is one block east of the hotel.  Mike Atherton, our Director of Training, is staying here during the 101 class and will meet everyone in the lobby between 8:00 and 8:15 each morning.

The Crowne Plaza - The rate is $95 a night and includes parking.  They have a restaurtant onsite, and there are many options within walking distance.  Walk south on Monticello and take a right onto Bute Street and after you cross Granby, we're the first building on the right (just past the construction site).  Mike Atherton will be staying here during the 202 training class.

The Renaissance by Marriott is just across the river in Portsmouth, and the rate is $119 a night.  This hotel is located on Portsmouth's waterfront, and is a 15 minute commute via the ferry ($1.50 each way) to Waterside.  There is a free bus that operates on Granby Street (the main drag of downtown Norfolk), or it's a short walk from the dock at Waterside to our offices.
