xTuple's Collective Brainpower Blog

With the launch of this new xtuple.org website we're also launching the first web-based interface to xTuple ERP. It's our CRM Support module , a tool that allows us to display CRM data from the xTuple database directly on the web (sorry, only authorized customers and partners have access to the online support portal!).

This is the first of many ways we can expose xTuple functionality...

We all know the knock on corporate acquisitions - particularly in the technology world. They never work out, all the good people leave within twelve months and one day, the product has got one foot in the grave by the time the ink on the purchase agreement has dried. And that's all too often true - a point I myself often note over at The ERP Graveyard Blog .

But I'm here to tell you...

While the recession has forced many major ERP software companies to retrench their operations, open source ERP software makers such as xTuple (formerly OpenMFG) are reporting an explosion of new business. The new momentum, xTuple says, is the result of organizations increasingly questioning the value of existing ERP contracts while simultaneously overcoming their...

xTuple, a small provider of open source ERP (enterprise resource planning) software, has a few surprising statements for channel partners: The company is profitable and has no plans to launch a SaaS (software as a service) platform because President and CEO Ned Lilly does not want to compete with channel partners. But that's not all.

OK, we admit it. That's a pretty shameless attempt to ride the coattails — of all the energy and excitement around the new U.S. President. Even for those who didn't support him (and the xTuple staff, like the rest of America, was split right down the middle), it's inspiring to think about starting fresh — learning from both best practices and past mistakes, but not being afraid to chart a new course when the situation calls for it.

Commercial open-source enterprise resource planning vendor xTuple continues to expand its product line and capabilities in order to try to appeal to more customers across more industries. It has ambitious plans for 2009, looking to debut a point-of-sale module, which can be booted up independent of the ERP apps. This dipping of a toe in modularity may mark the...

2008 was an exciting year for xTuple, and demand for our software has never been stronger. We've seen over 185,000 downloads of the PostBooks edition of xTuple ERP, and we consistently rank among the top 10 most active projects at SourceForge.net. Despite the economic slowdown, or perhaps because of it, there's never been a better time to be working with open source ERP.

Well, after a lot of false starts, I settled on PostBooks® from xTuple.com. The system includes MFG/ERP and those parts get more sophisticated in the other editions. Far from being "crippleware", PostBooks® will do more...
