xTupler #23 | May 2012
Dear Community —
I'm writing today with exciting news. In a few weeks' time, we will begin limited beta testing of a brand new xTuple product - a product which xTuple customers will receive at no additional charge, as part of their ongoing annual software maintenance relationship with xTuple.
The product is a full-blown Mobile Web app, which runs on tablets and smart phones (Apple and Android), as well as any modern Web browser on a desktop or laptop computer. It's unlike anything on the market today - written in 100% JavaScript, making use of a new generation of open source HTML5 technologies. It's actually faster than the existing xTuple Desktop client. That's something we never thought we'd say about a Web application.
The Mobile Web app will complement - not replace - the xTuple Desktop client. Both clients can be used simultaneously on the same database. And we plan to continue supporting the Desktop client for the foreseeable future.
And, as I've already mentioned, there will be no additional cost for the Mobile Web app. Several years in the making, this is the happy marriage of customer software maintenance dollars and our commitment to ongoing research and development for our products.
We're rolling out the Mobile Web app starting with version 4.0, due in early July, by doing a road show of three top technology conferences over the next few weeks (see below) to introduce it - and the underlying technology. If you'd like to learn more, please visit our online beta center for frequent updates.
Thank you so much for your partnership with xTuple. We look forward to working with you to make this new product deliver increased value for your business.

Startup Competition, Supported by xTuple
Winning the future through open innovation is a story with no beginning - or end. That was the biggest take-away from the second Start Norfolk build-a-business-in-a-weekend competition held at the end of April 2012 at Old Dominion University's Ted Constant Convocation Center.
L to R: Jonathan Aberman (Founders Corp, Startup Virginia), Marty Kaszubowski (Kaufman & Canoles Consulting) and Ned Lilly (xTuple CEO)
The metrics: over 275 attendees, 17 sponsors, 18 mentors and judges, 9 speakers and 73 ideas pitched. And we ended up a successful (as well as exhausting and exhilarating) weekend with 11 teams formed, over 1,000 lines of code written and three big, small business startup winners!
More on the winners - plus pictures.

Kudos for xTuple Support Team! I have been in the IT field for over 30 years and sometimes things get overlooked in major release changes. The main issue is when a problem arises what support do you get. Norm [at Yellow Dog] is our main contact for issues in xTuple and has been excellent in responding and forwarding to xTuple. The response from the xTuple support team was also excellent. It took us 4 days of testing and attempting to find a workaround and in this time Norm opened a ticket with xTuple. The normal process is to evaluate the urgency and assign appropriately. Within a week xTuple raised the ticket to critical and resolved a major issue for our company. My hats off to Norm and the xTuple support team for a job well done.
