Internet of Things Meets Kanban: An Updated Take on Inventory Control and E-kanban
By David Beauchamp —Software Implementation Engineer, Lead IoT Developer, xTuple — Open Source ERP+CRM+Web Portal
F78: Smart Manufacturing Supply Chain & Real-World Case Studies:
Kanban improves manufacturing efficiency — lean and just-in-time (JIT) — and is reliable for inventory control. But, it relies on analog technologies and manual work. Industry 4.0 means we can now have an IoT-connected inventory floor to eliminate the manual overhead of Kanban – from providing visual feedback on critical supply chain availability to helping workers quickly locate and “pick” needed inventory. Demo – see how IoT reduces mistakes by making the correct choice immediately obvious, in real-time.
The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) provides us with a way to harness a connected world in ways that eliminate the overhead of Kanban, from providing visual feedback on critical supply chain availability to helping your workers quickly locate inventory needed for picking. IoT can reduce the possibility of mistakes by making the correct choice obvious.
Many manufacturers have implemented electronic kanban (E-kanban) systems to eliminate common problems such as manual entry errors and integrated them into their enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, enabling real-time demand signaling across the supply chain and improved visibility. Join me as I demonstrate many of the ways an IoT-connected inventory floor breathes new life into an old friend.
Speaker Bio:
David Beauchamp has deep-dive technical and operational knowledge of enterprise applications in the world of manufacturing. He helps manufacturers maximize their business management processes from ground floor implementation to full production, including multilingual, multinational environments. A long time open source ERP user, David worked as a software engineer at a multi-national manufacturer before joining xTuple. David, a self-described hardware hacker, spends his free time contributing to the open source development community and helping automate life using a plethora of connected devices, i.e., the Internet of Things (IoT).
Co-presenters:
The Future of Analytics and the Supply Chain

Improving Profitability and OTIF by Using Product Segregation and Rationalization as a Tool for Strategic Decisions
In this workshop we will explore how Product Segregation and Rationalization goes beyond being an Inventory Management tool and can become part of an overall strategy to increase profitability and improve Customer Service. We will get acquainted with technology that helps to correctly segregate and rationalize our raw materials, intermediate and finished goods as well as other tools that can help minimize the negative effect of those "special" items that disrupt regular operations.
