Open Source-Based Application Leader Partners with Trolltech for Translation
OpenMFG, the leading provider of open source-based enterprise solutions for small manufacturers and distributors, today announced a partnership with Trolltech®, the company that makes software faster to build and easier to use to provide for easy translation of the OpenMFG ERP Suite. Under the expanded partnership, Trolltech — creators of Qt®, a high performance, cross-platform software development framework — will allow OpenMFG to distribute Qt/Linguist, a translation tool that is part of the Qt framework, at no charge to the OpenMFG international community.
The Qt/Linguist tool is available for download immediately, for Windows, Linux, and Apple Mac OS X, on OpenMFG's website. Also available for download is a fully functional OpenMFG client, which has been downloaded by thousands of users in over 100 countries across the world. OpenMFG leverages Qt's internationalization (or "i18n") features to load a "dictionary" file on each OpenMFG client at runtime; thus, each user of the ERP system can work in his or her own local language.
OpenMFG's authorized solution provider in Quebec, AS Plus Informatique, performed the first translation of the product; the French translation of OpenMFG version 1.3 is now available for all French-speaking Canada. AS Plus has helped French- and English-speaking small manufacturers implement ERP systems for over 14 years. The French Canadian dictionary file is also available for download on the OpenMFG website (along with the base US English reference file), and OpenMFG has also established a dedicated email list to support international translation efforts.
OpenMFG's flagship product is an advanced Enterprise Resource Planning software solution built with open source components, such as Qt, the Linux operating system, the PostgreSQL database, and the OpenRPT report writer. Available OpenMFG modules include Inventory Management, Product Definition and Costing, Work Order Management, Master Scheduling and MRP, Capacity Planning, Purchase Order Management, Sales Order Management, Shipping and Receiving, Sales Analysis, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and a full General Ledger.
Under the company's innovative hybrid license, customers and partners have full access to the application source code, and any enhancements made to the product flow back to OpenMFG for review, quality testing, and possible incorporation into the baseline product. Trolltech offers Qt under a dual license business model- providing a free, open source edition for users whose applications will also be fully open source, or a commercial license for users such as OpenMFG and its partners and customers. There is no runtime license of any kind for the OpenMFG community, nor are there any restrictions on the use of the Qt/Linguist application distributed by OpenMFG.
"We've been very pleased with Qt as a key element of our technology stack, and with Trolltech as a partner" said OpenMFG CEO Ned Lilly. "Our companies have a shared vision of leveraging open source as a means of developing superior software, and identifying best-of-breed approaches to software licensing and distribution in order to empower and grow our respective communities."
"The strong internationalization support and translation tools in Trolltech's Qt product now enables software that can be quickly and easily translated to more than 90% of the world's written languages with no need for access to application binaries," said Product Manager Eivind Throndsen, Trolltech . "We are very pleased that OpenMFG has based OpenMFG on Qt and are happy to help them in enabling community-based value creation, so users around the world can use OpenMFG in their language of choice."
